The Great Dune of Pyla

Tämän vuoden virallinen kesälomamatka sijoittui Biskajanlahden maisemiin, San Sebastianiin ja Biarritziin. Alunperin suunnitelmissa oli myös pari yötä Bordeauxissa, mutta siitä luovuttiin ajan puutteen vuoksi.

Lensimme kuitenkin Bordeauxiin, sen hyvien kulkuyhteyksien ja Easy Jetin huokeiden hintojen takia. Lentokentältä nappasimme Europcarin auton ja suuntasimme suoraan katsomaan Euroopan toiseksi suosituinta nähtävyyttä ja Euroopan suurinta dyyniä.

The Great Dune of Pyla/ Dune du Pilat (Pyla) on reilun pari kilometriä pitkä ja 500 metriä leveä dyynialue, joka sijaitsee noin tunnin ajomatkan päässä Bordeauxista, La Teste de Buchin alueella.

Vaikka olimme keskellä vilkkainta lomasesonkia, ei väenpaljous näin avoimessa ja laajassa paikassa haitannut. Auton saimme helposti parkkiin ja ainoat jonot olivat tyynien portaissa, jossa ei kuitenkaan joutunut odottamaan paria minuuttia kauempaa.

 

Portaiden yläpäässä meitä odotti oikea paratiisi. Kaunis aurinkoinen ilma, pehmeä, valkoinen hiekka ja aavat maisemat. Kova tuuli laittoi kampauksen uuteen uskoon, mutta se ei menoa haitannut, olimmehan lomalla.

Paikasta ei löydy paljon informaatiota netistä, mutta on ehdottomasti vierailun arvoinen. Meille nähtävyyttä suositteli espanjalainen ystäväni, joka on matkustellut paljon Biskajanlahden maisemissa.

Dyyneille on helppo ajaa, navigaattorimme löysi perille, vaikka itse emme olleet aivan varmoja sijainnista. Tyyneillä käynti ei myöskään maksanut mitään, pelkästään pulittamaan joutuu parkipaikasta (4 €, 4 tuntia). Dyynien vierestä löytyi myös pieniä kuppiloita ja matkamuistomyymälöitä, kun jano pääsi aurinkoisen päivän ja lentomatkan jälkeen yllättämään. 

Suosittelen paikkaa kaikille, jotka matkustelevat Bordeauxin suunnalla. Paikka sopii hyvin myös lapsiperheille. Dyynien alas kieriminen on lasten lempi puuhaa ja näin suurella alueella sitä voivat harrastaa kaikki ikään ja sukupuoleen katsomatta. Jippii, huusin minä!

This years’ official summer holiday took place in Bay of Biscay, San Sebastian and Biarritz.
Originally we were supposed to stop also in Bordeaux for a couple of days but we cancel that plan at last minute because of time problems.

But we did fly to Bordeaux because of easy and cheap Easy Jet. We rented a car from Europcar, Bordeaux airport and drove straight to visit at European’s second most popular attraction, and the biggest dune of Europe, The great Dune of Pyla.

Dune of Pyla/ Dune du Pilat or Pyla is about 2 kilometers long and 500 meters wide dune. It takes about an hour to drive there from Bordeaux and it’s situated in La Teste de Buch area.
Even though we were in the middle of tourist season, we weren’t bothered by other tourists. The area is so wide. It was really easy to park a car or walk to the dune. We needed to wait couple of minutes to get to the stairs, which led to the dunes, but it wasn’t a problem.

A real paradise waited us at the end of the stairs. Nice, sunny weather and soft white sand. Hard wind messed our hair but we were able to handle that nicely, after all it was our first day of vacation.

There aren’t much information about dunes on the internet, but the place is a must visit if you are in the area. My Spanish friend recommended this sight to me and it was really worth to see.

It was also very easy to drive to the dunes and our car’s navigator found it directly, even though we weren’t sure, where we were going. Visiting was totally free, except the parking was 4 euros for 4 hours. There were also several nice and small restaurants and tourist shops in the area.
I will happily recommend dunes to everybody. It’s also great place to visit with children, cause they love to play at the sand and roll down to dunes. Luckily at Dune du Pila everybody can do that!
